Quote: Koyori is quite possibly the most adorable character in creation.

Nah, I give that to Chiyo-chan from Azumanga Daioh.

Woah, a 10 from shoujoboy, is the apocalypse coming?! XD

The art is pretty (the background art), one of the reasons I watched this, 'cause I kept on seeing vectors and wallpapers of it here. Though I'm not fond of the character design itself, heads are too big and necks are too thin (I keep on wondering if the necks would snap under the weight of big heads XD).

Meh, I didn't think this series was as great as the hype, but then again, I marathoned it and I was kinda distracted at times (maybe that's 'cause this show didn't capture my attention? XD), maybe if I slowed down I might've noticed some of the things you did...

Okay, I see the bits of "humour" you tried to put in. Valiant effort =)

f

First of all, I'm surprised you picked this one, 'cause aren't you the shoujoboy? XD This one seems rather dark.

I've seen previews and promos for this and have been curious about it (since the few scenes I saw reminded me a tiny bit of Witch Hunter Robin), but I don't think I'd enjoy a complicated and twisted/random plot much (even Noir confused me >__> ) ^^;

What are the fight scenes like? Is there lots of action in this series compared to character/plot development?

f

Interesting review. I've heard a lot about this series and how popular it's getting, and have been wanting to try it out sometime, so the story and character analysis was particularly helpful and kinda got me interested in the characters (Lavi sounds like someone I might like ^^) :)

Your writing style is quite relaxed and subjective, which has its ups and downs. It was kinda entertaining to read what your honest opinions are, which is good, but on the other hand, sometimes I think you overdo it, and it's hard to take it as a review and not just a fangirl rant ^^;; and therefore not to be taken seriously (like all the fangirling bits)

Also, I think you put a lot of irrelevant stuff in there as well, such as that last paragraph in the Art section. I think that's totally unnecessary, because the comparison to the other shoujo series is quite biased and stereotypical ('cause not every shoujo art style have men with big hands and shoulders) and doesn't contribute anything to the review of DGM. (The rest of the art section is pretty good, just that last paragraph seems irrelevant)

The music section could be a bit more brief, 'cause a lot of it felt like ranting to me =_=;;

The presentation bit also seemed to be a fangirl rant, esp the bit about the forums >__> ...

Lastly, just curious, is the manga finished? And does the anime cover all of the manga? (or only up to a certain chapter as some anime adaptations tend to do)

f

Ah I love Honey and Clover. Some slice-of-life anime turn out to be boring, but I dunno why, this series captured my heart for some unexplainable reason; maybe one of the biggest reasons is how it can make me laugh one moment and cry the next (esp ep 8 with the twister game LMAO!), yet the transition is so subtle you hardly notice it.

I think your review is a bit too brief, esp in the story element, because it seems to be more of a summary than why it's enjoyable and good.

I personally love the insert song of H&C. Wasn't too fond of the openings, but they're growing on me XD

f

Just a suggestion, since it seems that you're writing this review for people who have finished (or at least seen most of) the anime, it might be nice to give a bit of a foreword stating as such, because there is that spoiler about Greed (maybe give the episode number instead?)

Quote: the kanji remains in the text with small translations nearby.

Is that for all of the dialog, or just for the sound effects?

f

I've just started watching this, and you're right, it's quite plot-intensive, and I try my best to pay attention to each detail so I won't get confused later XD

The background art and setting is rather pretty, and historically accurate to give you the sense of the setting. However, in some bits, like the hallway with the chandeliers, which detailed, I felt was too detailed for the purpose of animation... but then again, I always feel awkward seeing a mixture of stylistically drawn and photo-realism, or a mixture of 2D and 3D (which is what the chandelier hall felt like to me).. I kinda wish they'd stick to one or the other, not both.

I like historical fictions too. Yet this one adds a supernatural element to it, which is always interesting. Yeah it is rather strange to hear people speak Japanese when they're in France, guess you'd have to "pretend" that they're speaking French and Russian XD

Nice review :) It's detailed and insightful yet doesn't give too much away

oh and I love the opening and ending songs. The opening sounds.. epic (for a lack of better word ^^;; ) but pretty, and the ending song is calm yet almost melancholic, like the characters stop after a fight and think about what they're doing and stuff :)

f

Quote by shinshinoviThis one is not a review.
This is a criticism.

No, this is more like a disappointed/angry fan's rant. Except, that's what forums are for. Reviews are for objective analysis.

I don't care about the scores, they're just some numbers after all. But you did point out some positive things about the sound.

And yes, you dislike the movie (you got that point across), but the way you wrote it out made it sound more like a rant than anything else.

Quote: (from the looks of it that originates in the US and Canada, which is crap because Canada sucks)

Hey! That was uncalled for! *grrr*

hmm, Lelouch sounds like Light from Death Note, personality-wise.

Why did they have to split it into seasons, instead of making it like 50 eps or something (like Gundam SEED/Destiny, FMA etc)? that might give them more time to answer those questions.

The first ending song by Ali Project quite reminds me of Noir... though the images were pretty.

I've watched 2 eps of this and I'm actually kinda bored ^^'' but reading your review, maybe I'll stick with it a bit longer to see how it goes.

... pizza hut? O_o ...

f

Reading your review, all I got was that the story consists of a role-reversal of a taller girl and shorter guy, and how they fell in love, and that it's "good". I still don't get why it's good, or why I should read it like you recommended.

Quote: This plot is quite unique...

Just because the character designs are unique and there is a role reversal doesn't tell me why or how the plot is "quite unique".

Quote: A very sweet plot and storyline, and awesome characters and personalities.

Okay, that sounds interesting, but from reading your review, I still don't know why the character personalities are awesome.

It seems that you've repeated yourself quite a bit in the story analysis, and that rather than an objective analysis, you've simply given a plot summary from someone who is gushing over the manga.

Quote: but it seemed a bit repetitive when...

You pointed out a downside to the story, yet you still gave it a 10 (perfect score) when it's not perfect. Yes, you mentioned later that things make up for it, but there is still a flaw. Not everyone would consider then ending worth the repetitiveness. It's okay to rate something other than a perfect 10 you know, even if you absolutely loved the series, please write the review objectively.

One thing that's good about the review is that the art section is pretty well-reviewed.

However, do not just leave the sound section blank and simply give it a 10. Yes, mangas don't have sound, but according to A Reviewer's Guide to Minitokyo Reviews ,

Quote: 9. What should go in the sound section of manga reviews?

Manga do not have sound. However, leaving the sound category blank and assigning an arbitrary score will skew the final score tabulation for the entire review. Therefore, in the sound section, please review whatever aspect(s) of the manga not adequately covered by other sections.

As an example the Sound section could be used to review the writing in the manga. Here, reviewers can make notes about things like narrative text, dialogue, translation notes included in an english language edition, choices of typeface, and the like.

f

okay, so I finished watching this, so I'm gonna comment again XD

yeah that dragon scene was just O__o ... and it was out of nowhere and totally unnecessary. One other thing I find annoying is the constant flashback to the town blowing up, young Shirou walking amidst the flames, falling, and seeing his dad rescue him...

the plot is interesting all right, good amounts of twists and surprises. Though some parts left me with more questions than answers and very confused (and I'm not the sharpest to pick up subtle things ^^' ), like the Rin and Sakura thing, and Saber killing someone who looked a lot like her in one of her flashbacks O__o

f

nice review :)

would you recommend watching the original first? or go straight to the remake?

f

There's someone I know who likes to advocate for this series too.. A show about bread eh.. XD

Would you understand (get) those puns if you're not proficient in Japanese? I mean, how well do they translate?

f

>.< yeah I've seen 2 episodes of this, and it was mroe than enough for me... waaaayyy too bloody and gory and hentai and pointless.

can't believe you actually sat through 26 episodes of it....

f

"I don't think I've seen a single person not like this show"

lol, I have, just one person though... She found it too bloody and wrong (The whole idea of bringing ppl back to life bothers her I guess... and Gluttony eating ppl, and what happened to Nina...) ..

You're right about the ending though, it is rather abrupt and I think takes almost a whole different route, like they almost changed the plans or something >_< (well it does diverge from the manga midway through...), and it did get a bit confusing.. but I think they were trying to set it up for the movie (which wasn't too horrible imo). However, those last few episodes do have some good stuff, in the philosophical sense and all, and how it can relate to reality, as well as makes you think. So I guess there's some credit there (so can an ending really bring down the rating by 2 points? gah there should be 0.5's allowed >.< ).

You know what though, I didn't find 51 eps that long, because it is well-paced, and there's little flashbacks and stuff to bore you, and with the amount of stuff to cover, I think 51 is all right (I wouldn't want them to shorten it at the expense of making the plot less-understandable).

Yeah the voice acting is great. But what I also like about this is that the dub is also great. In fact, it's one of the best dubs I've seen (as good as Howl's Moving Castle imo). And I admit that I actually like the dubs more for this series (a rarity)...

Am I ranting? okay I'll go now...

I find it kinda amusing that FMA gets rated lower than Fate/Stay Night XD

btw, what # is this one on your list of 100?

f

"if you don't like Fate/Stay Night, you are the devil or gay; whichever offends you more." XD

what a way to end a review :D

*throws confetti* congrats on hitting 100! (you actually count the number of animes you watch?!)

anyway, nice review. I've only seen the first 4 episodes as of now, and it is pretty good so far ^^ Though I'm a bit surprised to see you give an anime such a high rating XD.

f

Yay first comment! ^__^

Anyway, this sounds interesting actually, and it's not too long. I think I'll add this to the list of animes to watch later :)

Nice review, got me interested ;)

f

I've never seen the anime, but I have read the manga up to volume 4 or 5 (can't remember, it's been a while). Have you noticed how CLAMP has changed their style? esp in the way they draw eyes, unlike the elaborate, huge, shoujo eyes of CCS and Rayearth, the eyes are slightly more simplified actually. In terms of character design, I have to say that Yuuko's design is rather unique, and very identifiable in the anime world, and Watanuki differs slightly from other typical CLAMP males. As for the proportions, yes CLAMP seems to have gotten worse at exagerrating the length of the limbs. At least they seem to have trimmed the shoulders down a little XD

The story, you're kind of right, that it does get a bit repetitive from what I've read so far, and how Yuuko likes to go on about destiny and fate and all that.

I wonder, have you see Tsubasa?

f

nice review. I like how you have the pros and cons for each subsection.

I really like the music. the OP song does take some used to, but I like the ending song, esp the different ways they'd do it for different episodes. The singer has a pretty unique style.

one thing though, Fafner has only 25 eps...unless you count the OVA as an episode...

f

Since I've never seen any of the previous Gundam series (in fact, SEED is the first meccha series I've seen), I didn't get the feeling of 'been there don't that' that you did.

yeah the art style is pretty, and the battle scenes and gundam designs are so complex that I can't imagine trying to draw them (I refuse to draw gundams...). as for the scene recycling like the Strike launching sequence, it does get annoying sometimes. but from the artists pov, I understand why they do it, because it saves money, time, and effort to not have to draw similar scenes over and over again.

the flashbacks are annoying, esp in phase 30, we get about 3-4 scenes of the Blitz being sliced in half -_-...

I agree that the OP and ends are pretty, esp Find the Way.

I do agree that most of the main characters are developed well, but more minor characters like the Druggies and astray girls are flat without any history. but in the writer's defence, there's simply no time of space to develop them.

as for the radio thing, they have an Internation Distress Channel, where anyone can tune into (like when Fllay called for help), and I think ships and gundams can radio each other kinda like calling someone on the phone. but for strategic things, they do have private channels (like when Yzak tells Dearka and Nicol to attack the AA while he takes care of Strike) that only they can use. but hey, this is set in the future, who knows what new technological advances they've made in the communication industry :)

f

good review. I agree with a lot of what you've said. Destiny rips off a lot from SEED. The ones that annoy me the most are:

Shinn/Stellar meeting, ripoff of Athrun/Cagalli meeting
AA vs Minerva, ripoff of AA vs Dominion
phase 49 of Neo's actions, ripoff of phase 49 of SEED

and all the new ones aren't nearly as well-done as the originals.

Yes, I'm glad that we get to see Rau's face too XD it bugged me SO much that they didn't show it in SEED...

The background music is pretty bland, doesn't stand out much at all. I didn't like any of the OP. but the last two endings were pretty, though doesn't carry as much meaning as Find the Way.
I dunno, I don't like Meer's version of Shizukana Yoru Ni. I think it's supposed to be a sad/melancholy song, and she made it into a fast, happy one. but Field of Hope is good, so is Stellar's image song, it fits her so well.
